Police Meeting Last Night, July 5th Hampton College

Police Meeting Last Night July 5th Hampton College

All Stanground councillors (except Cllrs Cereste and Walsh who sent apologies) were in attendance. Good to see representatives from Stanground Fire Service at the meeting and so many residents.

It was a good night for Park Farm as the playground area, which had suffered ASB; has been made a priority. This means the concerns will be taken on to the next meeting on Thursday (Police & PCC) and an action plan drawn up. It is so important to make that call and tell the Police of your concerns. (You can of course always call us). My thanks again to those who took the time to attend the meeting.

The action plan is a long term look at the problem, covering issues such as who is selling the youths the alcohol? Would lighting help or hinder the area? Extra patrols will be put in place, with shifts altered to cover times of concern.

The play area has been joined to  issues about the old care homes on Coneygree Road, which are currently being demolished.

Police figures show crime to be at a low in Stanground and Park Farm, but high in Fletton. The majority of calls to the area are for ASB issues, although burglaries have risen with 13 in Fletton alone.

Most of the meeting was given over to residents concerns about ASB in Hampton. The main theme which I know also concerns many Stanground residents too is what action (if any) can be taken when groups of youths are hanging around your area. Firstly it is important to remember they too have rights. They can be asked to move on, but; if they are not committing a crime they have as much right to be on the street as anyone.

Any crimes you see occurring should be reported immediately to the Police, who will give you an incident number. If you are able to take any photos or video of the offenders the images need to give a clear picture of the offender’s face. The Police also explained even with photographic evidence many of the youths are not from our area, and identifying them was a problem. It is also very important to remember that the police need your help too, you need to be prepared to make a statement if you are a witness and possibly appear in court.

This is a very abbreviated report of a lengthy meeting, if you would like further information or I can assist with anything please contact me.

The next meeting is:-

4th October, 7pm - 9pm Belsize Community Centre

Peterborough War Memorial Rethink Along Traditional Lines

Peterborough War Memorial Rethink Along Traditional Lines

PFNW attended along with over 60 citizens of the City of Peterborough, (many representing a diverse number of voluntary and ex-services organisations, families and individual members of the public) wanting to put their own point of view to the Peterborough War Memorial Steering Committee. The meeting was appropriately held in St Johns Church, Church Street on Monday July 4th. The chosen shortlisted designs were shown to the assembled audience to seek approval for one or more of the submissions.

It quickly became clear that none of the designs, all essentially a variation on a theme involving a pyramid core structure had found any approval or in the words of one commentator 'commanded respect.' It was explained that the existing War Memorial situated to the front of the Cathederal, had already been carefully examined by a structural engineer who declared that because of the metal core linking the various elements of the structure together, to move it would cause a great deal of damage, damage that could not be easily repaired.    >>>>>>>>>>>

So the decision was taken to leave it exactly where it is in the care of the cathedral staff and where individuals and relatives of the fallen could continue to engage in quiet contemplation. A new monument would be sited at the front of the Town Hall, so services and parades could be held and members of the public could gain access to the memorial.

The new site also presented problems as central Peterborough has a complex subterranian network of cables, water mains, drains, gas pipes, fibre optic installations, all requiring periodic access and obligatory holes to be dug at irregular intervals in the pavement or road.

After a short slide presentation, an open forum was declared and after a slow start, the comments and advice from the floor quickly became a stream of lucid but clear advice to the committee.

The selected designs were just not appropriate 'didn't command respect', 'didn't feel right','something more traditional' seemingly a setback but in reality a great leap forward, as almost reluctantly five more designs were produced by a Royal British Legion representative, drawn not by an award winning architect, sculptor or designer but a simple rendition of traditional but slightly updated outlines by a monumental mason.

Perhaps this is the missing piece of the jigsaw the committee was seeking all along? The audience immediately warmed to the late produced designs and of the five, two were selected, one with a representation of a maltese style cross at the apex, the other just a classic recognisable monument with a clean traditional design shape.

The material to be used would be granite and armed with the new designs, they will be worked up for another round of consultation and hopefully an installation in 2012. It is also hoped that the traditional design would release some donations which had until now been held back due to the controversial nature of the orignal offering. Chair of the steering group Cllr Irene Walsh declard the evening to be a " useful exercise" and expressed a determination to "get it right."

BEKO FRIDGE FREEZERS  manufactured between 2000 - 2006
URGENT FIRE RISK  helpline 0800 009 4837

We don't normally carry product warnings but this one is very important.  Since July last year there have been over twenty fires in the London area alone; caused by a BEKO fridge unit defroster switch shorting out due to moisture ingress and causing the surrounding plastic materials to catch fire.

Unfortunately this has now caused a fatality in an apartment fire also in London. BEKO have today released a freephone contact number 0800 0094837 and anyone with a BEKO appliance manufactured between 2000 and 2006 are strongly advised to call the freephone or visit the website  http://www.beko.co.uk/ ,the replacement part supplied and the repair will be carried out FREE OF CHARGE.

Police Alert

Police Alert

I have been contacted by Yellow Pages to confirm that as at 2nd July they will be distributing the new Yellow Pages to all our post codes. This delivery will take between 2-3 weeks

Just be aware that if your neighbours are on holiday you may need to move it out of sight till they return.

Secondly the Police control room have been contacted and informed that the following person will be canvassing door to door for the East Anglia Air Ambulance Lottery in post codes PE1 to PE7 over the next week - the person collecting in the Peterborough area is a Mr Rob Malcolmson and he will have a photo ID card with him. He should not call in No Cold Call areas so if he does please report to Consumer Direct - he will be dressed in hi vis jacket with Air Ambulance displayed or Navy Blue Fleeces displaying Air Ambulance on the front left breast or Navy Blue polo shirts with Air Ambulance displayed both front and back

Finally we have had reports of males knocking on doors very late at night in the Dogsthorpe area - Larch Grove and rural areas - Maxey - in one incident they asked the elderly resident for the time and on another occasion male was asking for lift to Spalding. Both incidents were reported to the police but best advice is not to engage with anyone at your door late at night if you are not expecting anyone - if they are persistent tell them you are ringing the police and report it on 0845 456 4564

Late Night Noise

Residents are complaining re a group of rowdy youths gathering late at night near the pond. The first stage is to let someone know! We attend all the police meetings - the next one is on Tuesday at Hampton. On Tuesday YOU can say where YOU want the police priorities to be. We have argued constantly for Park Farm - we have not had a councillor to represent us for some time. Without any complaints being made to the police the whole thing tends to sound silly - 'but no one has complained' so can I urge you to 1) Call the police,  2) Call us and let someone know!!

The priorities in the past have tended to be
Fellowes Gardens
Parking at Hampton

If you want your area and your home to feature as a priority please come along and make your voice heard.

UNINSURED MOTORCYCLE ALERT ## VERGE PARKING CLAMPDOWN ## DOGS "RUNNING WILD"

UNINSURED MOTORCYCLE ALERT

Clearly the silly season has started. Earlier today 2nd July 2011, several residents witnessed yet another motorbike being dangerously driven at very high speed by a helmetless UNINSURED twerp up and down the greenwheel cycle path several times alongside Park Farm. Approaching the footpath from the opposite direction were two parents and their very young son age 5, just learning to ride his very first pedal bike.

It can only be a matter of time before there is an accident and an outcome too horrible to think about. If you know who owns this low slung motorcycle, please immediately contact either PFNW or the local police team on 0845 456 456 4.  PFNW members have taken video from this morning and descriptions of the rider and bike have already been passed to police.  ###

CARS & COMMERCIAL VANS PARKING ON GRASS VERGES - RAMSAY WAY & PARK FARM WAY

We understand that vehicle registration numbers of cars and commercial vans are to be taken from this week onwards as the vehicles are not only damaging the grass in these dry conditions but also interfering with mowing machines. Report incidents directly to the City Council: David.marshall@peterborough.gov.uk quote date, time, location (nearby lamppost serial number?), vehicle registration number, make of vehicle and if possible a photograph.

New Councillor Chris Harper thinking of dropping councillor surgeries....

The posting below has just appeared on Councillor Chris Harpers facebook social networking page.  Understanding that Chris is a newbie first time Councillor for Peterborough Stanground East - which includes Park Farm - and he will naturally seek to canvas the views of his older established  'fellow councillors'. We are very unhappy that he has so quickly after being elected already taking the view that the councillor surgeries are possibly a waste of time and money and may be dropped on the grounds of cost.

It also has to be said that he has added a couple of committees to his workload and that would impact on the time he has for Stanground & Park Farm Residents

Clearly if the surgeries are widely advertised, held on a regular basis, then they are attended and of value. Many older people don't have twitter or facebook, cannot afford computers and if it involves paperwork or forms of any kind, (eviction notices, legal papers, domestic violence for example?)  then clearly a cross table face to face meeting is required whatever the cost.   We have given the link to the direct.gov. uk website which clearly states what is expected of your local councillor. We would suggest that Chris uses Stanground Library where the hire charge won't break the bank or uses the small office at Stanground or Southfields Community Centre.

Cllr. Chris Harper: "I'd like to canvas opinion on councillor surgeries. Having spoken to fellow councillors it appears that attendance at many surgeries is poor if not zero on many occasions. Bearing this in mind and being mindful that the hire of rooms does incur costs, I'm uncomfortable with wasting tax payers money on surgeries and my time if no one is likely to turn up but want to be available to everyone in the ward."

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/UKgovernment/Localgovernment/DG_073312

This is what they say on the Government Website

Contact your local councillor
If you want to discuss any issues with your local councillor, you can contact them via your local authority or attend the councillor's advice surgery. Advice surgeries are available for local people to ask for help or advice, make a complaint or enquire about local authority services.

Chris York who is championing Stanground writes:

I want to respond to Cllr Harpers FACEBOOK post,

Firstly, Councillors are paid with taxpayers money to represent us fairly across the board.

Secondly, the expense allowance is paid to cover costs of surgeries, newsletters, they cannot simply rely on the web.

Also, no councillor will get involved in other ward issues. Chris MUST hold regular surgeries and listen to all the people and not just those who elected him.

The CLF fund is there for the use of the ward, community groups etc, I will get the criteria from PCC website and quote it word for word, bit like the pool issue really.

Traffic issues are highways, also CLF funding is NOT for that purpose

If needs be I'll hold a bloody surgery every quarter to get peoples views to present to council, I want true responsible representation from my councillor, regardless of which political party they represent.

We want benches by the river, more dog bins, money for the youth booth, pensioners luncheon club might be good too and also monies towards setting up a Park Farm Residents Association and WI etc etc.

Donations to pre schools that serve the area in order to allow them to put on educational trips, half the money normally goes to Heritage Park School which I personally do not agree with

Kind regards

Chris York
