Luckily Beer drinkers waiting for the first day of the Peterborough Beer Festival to open, didn't see some 27 swans neatly wrapped in canvas carry bags as they would have rubbed their eyes in disbelief and immediately given up the drink! A further flock of swans looked out of the windows of several RSPCA vans parked nearby.
An oil slick further up river had contaminated the swans. RSPCA teams raced up and down the River in two inflatable boats carefully capturing the oiled Swans. Once carefully cleaned by hand, they will be returned to the River but only after the Swans' natural oils had waterproofed the cleaned feathers. RSPCA have since confirmed that other swans have been contaminated and they may have to make a return trip to round them up. The Environment Agency is on the trail of the polluter and may well end up in Court as a result.
