On My Soapbox PFNW Talking Point

Stavros Stewart might lead us all on a merry dance....

This Talking Point was prompted by Stewart Jackson MP sounding off in the local newspaper and really it deserves some kind of answer or rebuttal. What do you think? Feel free to add your comments and we'll get them to Mr Jackson!
STOP PRESS: THE PLAN WAS VOTED THROUGH, but unfortunately so was the Arab Dubai World promoted MAGNA PARK proposal, which will plant a major rail freight/road freight container terminal and mega-warehouses alongside Park Farm. This was due in part to our local Cllr. Janet Wilkinson for reasons best known to herself, voting in favour!!!!!! Cllr. Wilkinson isn't standing again and we understand no longer lives in the area, hopefully the next Cllr. will see the folly of all this. The fiction that that Magna Park will create 5,000 local jobs is repeated in the report, when at best no more than 1,000 will be employed on site and many of those jobs will be sourced from outside the region.

I really cannot understand why Stewart Jackson MP continues to plough a sad, lonely furrow over the proposed new housing issue. 25,000, 250,000 or even 25 million homes is simply an aspirational target and not a figure cast in stone. Why do the numbers matter, it's only a projection?

The final number of houses after countless planning inquiries and finding developers (and banks!) willing to fund the schemes will also put a damper on the figures. As Mr Jackson was a banker (LOUD BOO!) a Lloyds Bank High Street Bank Manager to be exact before taking up politics he should realise this.

If you don't show willing in the first place and extend the welcome mat, no one outside our region or in Europe will ever take Peterborough seriously as a possible well placed development and investment opportunity. Stewart Jacksons' continual carping just points up dissent and division (to be fair to our fine City, we should recognise Stewart Jackson considers West London to be his first home).

The MP for Central Peterborough, has never really championed anything substantial or worthwhile and when his time playing politics ends what will the historians write about him? Stewart Jackson has always found time to belittle and pick holes in any local initiative, usually through a rant on Twitter. We should also factor in that he is only the MP for Central Peterborough, he only represents a proportion of the City, indeed his remit doesn't even extend as far as Stanground or Park Farm. So Mr Jackson isn't even my voice in Whitehall as part of a weakened coalition to boot....

At the very well attended Neighbourhood Policing Panel meeting held in Stanground last night and reported on the Park Farm Neighbourhood Watch Website, the deputy leader of council let slip the fact that Peterborough has millions more in terms of inbound resident population than Whitehall officially recognises. This has a direct bearing on funding from Whitehall and of course if Stewart Jacksons deprecating view was taken up by the Coalition, the City of Peterborough would continue to be deprived of inward investment and additional funding from Whitehall. It matters not, which faction or government is in power. MP's when not being locked up for stealing public funds by way of expenses, should be wholeheartedly supporting and championing each and every initiative and if they are unable to do so, come up with a viable alternative which can be debated by all.

Finally, on a far more important matter, we should send our thoughts and best wishes to the Queensland State Premier and to the City of Brisbane Queensland, Australia and constructively work out a way the City of Peterborough can provide practical help, assistance and tactical support to our Australian cousins. Possibly an airlift of essential heavy engineering equipment, generators, water filtration plants and high volume dirty water pumping sets for example. The floods may have reached their peak but the far more dangerous search and rescue phase is just starting.
