New Sentencing Guidelines for both Crown and Magistrates Courts released

Crown Court Guidelines>

Magistrates Court Guidelines>

New sentencing guidelines have been issued to Crown Courts and also to Magistrates Courts following a consultation period. The complete list of changes are contained in PDF files (links above).

Hard copies will be available in Court buildings within the next three months. The changes are important, as an assault for example, is now being treated very seriously and the new sentencing guidelines both custodial and financial penalties available to the Court reflect this.

Park Farm Neighbourhood Watch Street Coordinators are asked to make note of the changes and cascade the information locally, it will also make a 'soapbox' or 'doorstep' talking point for the local election campaign which is about to start....

FINE BANDS

In the new guidelines, fines are now expressed as one of three fine bands (A, B or C).

**Starting Point (Applicable to all offenders) ****Category Range (Applicable to all offenders)

Band A **50% of relevant weekly income ****25–75% of relevant weekly income

Band B **100% of relevant weekly income ****75–125% of relevant weekly income

Band C **150% of relevant weekly income ****125–175% of relevant weekly income

The public have been very concerned that the court system appears to favour the criminal more than the victim and hopefully this will go some way to addressing the balance.....its still not hard enough in my opinion.
