Head Butting Would Be Robber Jailed at Peterborough Crown Court

A MAN who attempted to mug a woman by head-butting her just after she had arrived in the City of Peterborough has been jailed for three years.

Naweed Khaliq, 31, of Cromwell Road, Peterborough, targeted the 64-year-old from Norfolk after seeing her waiting for her husband outside Queensgate bus station in the city centre.

The female victim  felt a pain to the right side of her head and realised Khaliq was trying to pull her handbag from her grasp. But she held on and turned to face the mugger who claimed she had barged into him.

The lady was shocked and frightened and warned Khaliq not to approach her. A member of the public came forward to help together with some security guards, who detained Khaliq until police arrived.

In a police interview Khaliq denied attempting to rob the victim but yesterday (September 15) he was found guilty of attempted robbery at Peterborough Crown Court and jailed.

In an impact statement, the court also heard the victim's husband had died shortly after the incident.

Detective Constable Kevin Poole said: "This was a callous attempt to rob a vulnerable victim but Khaliq refused to admit what he'd done.

"This sentence shows how seriously robbery is taken and has taken into account the impact the crime has had on the victim."
