Youth Involvement

I am all for Youth involvement in the community, and think in some quarters they have been short changed. (I am the Secretary to Stanground Youth Project Group so I’ll declare an interest here straight away). SYPG's kitty currently stands at around £500.

Last year the Youth Forum, a group led by PCC were asked to identify how they would spend £10 Thousand pounds in the Community. I found hard to see where the Community was actually involved in this. The money in effect was moved from one area of PCC to another. No element of fund raising was involved, and no other youth groups were invited to bid for a share of that money. Our Neighbourhood kitty is £25k so £10k represents a fair chunk of that.

My suggestion for next year is that it is open to applications from all youth groups in our area, with an element of any group winning funding  to raise portion of  money themselves. I also think our youths deserve a place to meet and access to the Community Center would supply this. The success of any project relies on long time financing. Clr Irene Walsh is organising the Stanground Fete next year, 2012 with the  proceeds being donated to the Youth Project Group. Perhaps some of the £10k next year (if indeed we are spending £10k) could be used in advertising for, and training up volunteer adult youth workers in our area? Lets give then something to build on this time and not squandor on short term projects.Volunteer adult Youth Workers are badly needed and if you can give some time to this please let us know.
