Peterborough City Council and Peterborough United football club confirm next steps for new stadium project.....
Planning applications have been submitted for a new temporary car park and new flood lighting, as part of the work to re-develop Peterborough United's London Road football ground.
Peterborough City Council also submitted proposals to create a temporary car park on the former Club Metro and shops site, to be used by the club while the Moy's End stand is re-developed, and new floodlights to replace the dismantled Moy's End lighting tower.
Subject to planning permission being granted, it's expected work will start on the new lighting and electrical upgrades in November 2011. The demolition of Club Metro will also start in November 2011.
Work has already taken place to provide space for visiting disabled supporters in the North Stand, and new ducts have been added in preparation for the demolition of the Moy's End stand. The above ground pitch irrigation tank currently at the northern end of the Moy’s End stand is also being relocated and to maximise space this is be installed underground. It is planned to feed the tank from rainwater from the roof of the new building. The grounds maintenance store is attached to the southern end of the current Moy’s End Stand and will be demolished, an alternative temporary location has had to be found.
Richard Hodgson, the city council's Head of Strategic Projects, who came under fire at a recent neighbourhood meeting for the reduction in football supporters car parking provision said: "The granting of planning permission for the first phase of the plans at committee was a key milestone in making the stadium project a reality.
"The council has been working closely with Peterborough United to ensure the proposals meet the needs of the club whilst also creating a facility which can be enjoyed by the whole city. We have also closely involved Morris Homes in the plans due to the Carbon Challenge homes project which is taking place on the site next to the football ground. This comprehensive approach underpins our approach to redeveloping this important area of the city.
"We have begun the search for a main contractor to undertake the construction of the new development, with a notice being posted in the European Journal which has already attracted significant interest from major building firms. A shortlist will be selected from interested parties and it is planned to send out tender documentation in November, following the completion of detailed design, to allow the main contractor to be appointed in the New Year. Local community worker Chris York commented: "It is to be hoped the PCC will also advertise and give preference to local construction firms who will guarantee to use local labour and skilled trades for this project.
"We will continue to work in tandem with the football club to move forward this exciting project."
The overall programme is still on track for the education block to be completed by end of August 2013, with the new stand being handed over to the club in spring 2013. The football club and council are however still in the process of agreeing a date at which to hand over the Moy’s End stand for demolition and start of the build contract. The city council has also started to look at how to take forward the next two phases of the project - the London Road Terrace and North Stand.
